Equally yoked?

Posted by That Other Mike on 18/06/2012

It’s kind of a shame to lose a voice for atheism – it always is when someone decides to jump back into the theist slime pool, but I can’t help thinking that someone whose reasoning skills are so evidently poor is hardly a great loss.

Christopher Hitchens dies at 62 after suffering cancer

Posted by That Other Mike on 16/12/2011

BBC News – Christopher Hitchens dies at 62 after suffering cancer

British-born author, literary critic and journalist Christopher Hitchens has died at the age of 62.

He died from pneumonia, a complication of the oesophageal cancer he had , at a Texas hospital.

Vanity Fair magazine, which announced his death, said there would “never be another like Christopher”.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Blue, and their daughter, Antonia, and his children from a previous marriage, Alexander and Sophia.

Poor old Hitch.

I’ll be honest — I never liked him as an individual, but I always respected his skills as an orator and polemicist. His bravery in the face of his terminal illness is an example to us all, as was his unwillingness to bow down in the face of the smugness of god-botherers; I can imagine him spitting vitriol at anyone who waved a Bible and asked if he was ready to reconsider. We shan’t see his like again.

Not just ignorant and bigoted, but proud of it

Posted by That Other Mike on 15/12/2011

The modern American Right – not just ignorant and bigoted, but proud of it. Essentially, right-wingers in the USA have elevated ignorance, stupidity and cupidity to the highest value. Given that fact, it’s no wonder that they feel no shame whatsoever in posting this kind of crap.

There is no understanding of First Amendment scholarship or case law there, only a lot of in-my-gut-I-know-it’s-true, a lot of truthiness, and, to be blunt, a lot of idiocy. There is also little to no evidence of an understanding of common humanity; ironic, given the poster’s pretence at being Christian, that he would disregard the precepts of good will to all in favour of repugnant and juvenile Nazi comparisons. If this is the best that the modern Right can come up with, the Left has nothing to worry about.

I’m not going to rehash every single way that the Underground Conservative is wrong –it’s established law and well-known that government entities are prohibited from having religiously partisan and sectarian displays at any time of year, whatever the ignorant may say about it– and it would be a waste of time, in any case; the poster is not interested in a dialogue, after all, only in scoring cheap political points by waving his flag of stupidity.

The Underground Conservative would do best to live up to his name – underground is where most of the creepy-crawlies live, after all, and he fits right in there.

ETA: Oh, look – he’s trying to be insulting. How cute, he thinks that’s going to be insulting!

Unless… Well, let’s think about it. The Underground Conservative, who I will be calling Peter from now on (as that’s his name) does live in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and it is kind of rural near there. Could it be that he thinks he’s being helpful? Could it be that Peter DiGaudio actually likes sheep and thinks he’s making a useful contribution?

Petey, while it’s nice that you’re trying to be a productive member of the community for a change (because your coaching obviously doesn’t qualify), I don’t go that way. Plus, I’m happily married. To a human woman.

Quotation of the Day

Posted by That Other Mike on 15/05/2011

Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.

A Very Stupid Apologist (But, I Repeat Myself)

Posted by That Other Mike on 26/03/2011

Shorter Jesse Murch, The Reformed Inquisitor, Where is Atheism’s Crutch?

I don’t have the intellectual or emotional capacity to live without an imaginary friend, so nobody else can either!

Jesse’s post is essentially the same old discredited apologetics (“You’re only an Atheist because you hate God!”) with the added unpleasantness of “You should totally kill yourself!”

Here’s the thing, Jesse – your being unable to walk without a crutch doesn’t make the rest of us lame, anymore than someone losing an eye makes the whole world blind.

In other words, your being an idiot doesn’t make me one.

Unconscienced?

Posted by That Other Mike on 27/03/2010

Shorter Evil Ned Flanders, Eternally Twatters
Unconscionable
The fact that all the supposedly celibate Catholic priests who attacked young choirboys are men means that all homos are pedos, and the fact that the world at large views this as an unconscionable slur on the millions of non-rapist homos is a sign of political correctness gone mad!

It is emphatically not a case of pedophiles preying on the nearest available child in a hierarchy arranged almost solely of men, no sir, no way, no how. I will admit, grudgingly, that the Pope was naughty not to fire the priests, but that’s about it. Anyway, the fact that they were men makes my flaming homophobia A-OK!

In my next post, watch as I explain how the existence of Black crack addicts make it OK for me to say “nigger!”

Even Shorter Neil Simpson, Ike Turner-ty Matters:
Unconscionable

Fuckin’ fags. Am I controversial and douchey enough to be Pat Robertson’s One True Heir yet?

A ‘verse, a ‘verse, my brain for a multiverse!

The ability of Creationists to fool themselves into thinking they understand science always astounds me — they so obviously and plainly fail at it on every level. And yet they always seem to think that they are able to see something that actual scientists don’t or won’t, because there’s some huge anti-Creationist conspiracy of scientists who hate God or something equally ridiculous – and they, by golly, with their third grade level of science understanding, are just the ones to overturn all those thousands of hours of study and experimentation.

Or something. Read the rest of this entry »

Saudi cleric favours one-eye veil

Posted by That Other Mike on 06/10/2008

BBC NEWS | World | Middle East | Saudi cleric favours one-eye veil.

A Muslim cleric in Saudi Arabia has called on women to wear a full veil, or niqab, that reveals only one eye.

Sheikh Muhammad al-Habadan said showing both eyes encouraged women to use eye make-up to look seductive.

The question of how much of her face a woman should cover is a controversial topic in many Muslim societies.

The niqab is more common in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, but women in much of the Muslim Middle East wear a headscarf which covers only their hair.

Sheikh Habadan, an ultra-conservative cleric who is said to have wide influence among religious Saudis, was answering questions on the Muslim satellite channel al-Majd.

Just… what? For fuck’s sake! So much for religious morality.

I can’t wait for the Christian Right to jump all over this. You know, the same people who say that a woman’s place is in the home, that only men should be in charge. All that good stuff.

When will things turn around in Saudi Arabia and indeed the whole religious world?

Women are not wicked temptresses who are out to destroy the righteousness of innocent and virtuous men. They’re not the source of original sin or lust or whatever. They’re people.

I’m not usually one to advocate invading countries left, right and centre, but this pushes me towards it. And yet, we see no action by any Western governments in this regard.

And you know why? It’s black, stinky and powers cars.

Fools, damned fools and Christians

Posted by That Other Mike on 27/07/2008

My wife is trying to kill me. She must be, because she keeps telling me to look at stuff which is so profoundly stupid that it makes my brain crinkle and go phutphut.

Like just the other day, when she was comment surfing and ended up at a blog called What I Really Think, which spectacularly fails to live up to the verb in its name, although the URL seems entirely appropriate. I swear, I keep expecting to look at the screen and see that it’s written in crayon.

Funnies, though – the writer doesn’t seem to realise that she has a pride flag in her header.
